Introducing our firm
ELV architecten is an independent architectural firm which was established in 1947. Our extensive experience in designing homes, shopping centres, offices, government buildings, interiors and public spaces is continuously being extended and passed on to younger generations. We see a significant role for ourselves throughout the entire process, from a business speed date/ top line assessment to post-delivery/maintenance. This is all for the benefit of the client and an optimum end result.

Collaboration & communication
Our firm believes in an integrated design process. We make buildings in which people feel comfortable. We do not know in advance how the building will look, which materials will be used or how the routes to, from and through the building will be formed. As architects, we stand alongside the user and the client and try to imagine what they see, what they find attractive and useful, or ugly and impractical. We then analyse this and ask ourselves why this is so, before passing our findings through to the design team. We will not hesitate to inform clients if ambitions are not consistent with the available budget.

How we work
Projects are supervised by two architects, to ensure a good exchange of information. Working together with the project manager, one architect is closely involved with the project until its completion. Without preconceived ideas, we develop a design which fits with the context and fulfils the wishes of the client/user. Our best designs/buildings are created in close consultation with the client/user. All design decisions and alternatives can be discussed in two-weekly sessions. Insight into the client's needs is our highest priority.

Architecture
The wonderful thing about the architectural profession is that we design buildings which stand in public spaces and are there for all to see. At the same time, this is also a great responsibility; public space is fragile, and needs to be treated with care. This is why we design buildings for different contexts, which complement their surroundings. Using careful detailing and solid materials, our buildings defy time. For over 60 years, this has been our basis for sustainability.

Sustainability
Sustainability is in our genes. It begins with taking good care of the environment. An intelligent concept involves maximising use of the available space, achieving more with fewer materials. Flexibility and multifunctionality ensure long-term adaptability. Building in a compact way and limiting the outer surface area, combined with façades which are meticulously adapted to the position and use of the building, can minimize the use of climate control systems.

Innovation and research
Market dynamics demand a continuous process of renewal. Just as the architectural profession must be constantly redefined, the assignments also change over time, as well as the technical possibilities. We proactively challenge ourselves to develop new concepts, techniques and materials. We use all our creativity to convert innovation into a liveable built environment.
Quality control
Since 1998, ELV architecten has applied an internal quality control system. This system has been continuously updated over the years. It was set up with external supervision and completely complies with ISO 9001/2000.

BIM
As of 1 January 2011, ELV architecten develops new designs in Revit. This principally means that everything is entered into a 3D model; at an early stage, the three-dimensional design can be presented to stakeholders and information can be exchanged. This provides the basis for the BIM (Building Information Model), a method whereby drawings, dimensions, standards and all other important information about the project are stored, simultaneously used and managed in one place.

Construction costs
Our firm regularly delivers cost-conscious design work within challenging budgets. Due to our experience, we know what is realistic within proposed budgets. We have found that cost-conscious designing at an early stage can keep quality at a high level. There needs to be clarity early on regarding the allocation of construction costs for the various components. This is a prerequisite for an effectively-led design process and responsible advice.
